Drie grote wijnen gaan samen

Frescobaldi Joins Forces With M. Mondavi & SPI

Venerable Italian wine firm Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi has formed a partnership with Napa’s MIP, owned by Michael Mondavi, and Geneva-based SPI Group to operate a trio of Frescobaldi’s Italian fine wine producers: Tenuta dell’Ornellaia (Bolgheri), Castel Giacondo (Montalcino) and Luce della Vite (Montalcino). The creation of the joint venture, called Tenute di Toscana, emerged out of Frescobaldi’s capital offering to foreign investors following its recent 100% acquisition of the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia winery, which produces the Masseto and Ornellaia brands.

Financial terms of the deal were not immediately released, but Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi will retain a 72.29% share of Tenute di Toscana’s holdings and elect six of the eight members on its board (including Michael Mondavi, formerly CEO of Robert Mondavi Winery, which was acquired by Constellation Brands in 2004). SPI will elect the final two members: SPI Chairman Yuri Shefler and Deputy Chairman Andrey Skurikhin.

Frescobaldi has stated that Tenute di Toscana is primarily a financial arrangement and that “management, production and distribution will remain unchanged in all three Tuscan estates.” Still, the Italian winemaker stands to benefit from SPI’s deep pockets and long reach (it distributes products in more than 120 countries, most of its alcohol sales coming from spirits such as core vodka brands Stolichnaya and Moskovskaya) and Mondavi’s knowledge of the U.S. market (Mondavi’s Folio Fine Wine Partners already handles Frescobaldi’s brands in the U.S. and co-founded Luce della Vite in 1995).

Frescobaldi, which has produced wine under the same name since the 14th century, posted revenues of €57.6 million ($74m) in 2005, with labels such as Nipozzano, Montesodi and Mormoreto. Of the offerings comprised in Tenute di Toscana, Luce della Vite has by far the largest presence in the U.S. market at 145,000 nine-liter cases, but it has struggled from a growth standpoint since its 2003 release.
