Champagne sales continue to surge in the U.S. market. Champagne exports to the U.S. grew by 12% to more than 1.9 million cases in 2006, according to the Comité Interprofessionel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC). The growth was supported by an uptick in the Rosé category, which by itself experienced a 32% increase over 2005. Champagne shipments to the U.S. in 2006 were valued at $533.6 million.
The U.S. is Champagne’s second-largest market by volume. Though the U.K. is more than 50% larger, because Champagne’s per-case value is some 35% higher in the U.S., it’s challenging the U.K. for leadership on the value side. The U.K. and U.S. collectively account for more than 40% of global Champagne exports by both volume and value. Overall Champagne shipments grew by nearly 5% last year.
