Agriculture ministers agree to disagree
European agricultural politicians are fighting over the planned reform of EU wine regulations. While there is a basic willingness to reach an agreement, so far all sides are standing fast on their special interests.
A meeting of agruculture ministers and their deputies in Brussels made clear the various differing standpoints. For instance, France has rejected the proposed uprooting of 400.000 hectares of vineyards over the next five years, while Germany will not agree to a ban on chaptalisation. Even the use of oak chips, which has long since been agreed to in principle, is being rejected by the Germans, which in turn has upset the Italian delegation.
At an inter-state level, there is little wilingness to drastically reduce subsidies for wine producers. Even the Finnish council president is unclear as to the terms of a possible compromise, although Finland as a non-wine-producing member has the advantage of being impartial in the matter.
