De NAVO sponsort met 350.000 euro een wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar de natuurlijke kurk. Dit in het kader van het Science for Peace programma.
Dan blijven de kurkeiken in Zuid Europa behouden, en dan blijft er ook vrede???

The fight against alternative wine closures has been joined by one of the world’s most powerful military organisations. NATO is contributing £247,000 to research into pesticide contribution to TCA contamination by a team at the University of Paisley in Scotland.
The funding comes from NATO’s Science for Peace programme, which says that the survival of the cork forests is a significant regional issue in southern Europe/North Africa. The project will see the Paisley team working alongside scientists from Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia and Italy.
"The cork industry is important to the North African economy and it is essential that the ‘cork taint’ problem is investigated, both to support the use of real cork and to help protect biodiversity in the Mediterranean coastline," said Andrew Hursthouse, professor of environmental geochemistry at the University of Paisley.
