GENERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE WEATHER TREND 2005

Autumn and winter were very rainy with temperatures rather low and with snow which caused a delay in the regrowth of vegetation by 12 – 15 days compared to last year.
Almost to compensate this delay the advantageous weather conditions of the spring months favoured an early development of the grapevine of 10 days.
The following months of June, July and August were much cooler, characterized by average temperatures of 24 °C and abundant rains during the month of August. Even if these situations caused several problems throughout the ripening and after harvest, grapes were healthy, completely ripened, of a good quality, up to the recent harvests and with a good potential.

Chianti Classico (Tignanello, Pèppoli, Badia a Passignano)
The abundant and frequent rains during the month of August caused a general delay compared to the seasonal average concerning the ripening and harvesting of grapes.
The selection of grapes to be used in the production of reserves began during the second half of August, leaving only the best clusters. The grapes for the production of the “Vino Novello” were harvested during in the first week of September, whilst Merlot was the first variety harvested (from September 7 up to the last week of the month). Also the grapes to be used for the production of Vinsanto were harvested during this period. The harvest of Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes began around September 20 and was concluded during the middle of October. The musts obtained are characterized by strong and typical aroma with a characteristic bright colour. The good polyphenolic structure reminds us of elegant and well structured wines with mature tannins.

Montepulciano – Cortona (La Braccesca)
Also in this area the strong rains towards the end August – the beginning of September influenced the 2005 harvest.
The grapes of the Merlot variety were harvested for first, in good health and at the correct ripe degree; the wines are characterised by optimal colours and very well structured.
The weather trends affected the Syrah harvest (this variety prefers warm) so that a selection was required in the vineyards, in any case, without this preventing wines from expressing their good potentials.
Also as regards Sangiovese (the last harvested variety) it has been necessary to select manually grapes before the real harvest. The potential of the wines obtained are in line with the expectations: very bright colours, typical varietal aromas, complex tannin structure: all premises involved for obtaining top-quality reserve wines.

Montalcino (Tenuta Pian delle Vigne)
As regards Montalcino, as in the entire Tuscany zone, the harvest of grapes began later.
The vintage of Sangiovese grapes, in fact, started at the beginning of September 15 and was extended throughout the first days of October. Accurate pre-harvest selections were needed thus obtaining a good crop with healthy and mature grapes.
The 2005 wines obtained by Sangiovese grapes are complex, well-structured and characterized by a fine texture which makes us expect an optimal qualitative evolution.

Bolgheri (Tenuta Guado al Tasso)
The Bolgheri vintage began on 23 August with pre-harvest selections aiming at leaving only the best grapes on the plant, and was concluded during the first ten days of October. The harvest of Merlot began during the first days of September when grapes reached a more then satisfactory maturity level
The end of August and the first days of September were characterized by strong rains which delayed the harvest of Merlot and Cabernet franc.
An accurate selection of the grapes harvested were necessary during the last days of vintage especially for the variety Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
In general the grape maturity and quality fully satisfied the expectations. The production of wine was minded in order to express the product potentials as much as possible.
Also the grapes Vermentino, accurately selected, lead us to expect products up to its qualitative standards.

Sovana (Fattoria Aldobrandesca)
Even though the regrowth of vegetation occurred later compared to the standard 10-15 days, due to the rainy season including summer, the grapes of the Aleatico variety were characterised by a good typical aroma and good sugar concentration.
The variety Cabernet has reached different results depending on its location and the age of the vineyards; in the older ones, grapes reached an optimal phenol ripening, together with a good health which made it possible to obtain wines of good concentration and tannin structure.

Castiglione della Pescaia – Grosseto (Tenuta Le Mortelle)
Also in this area ripening of grapes was influenced by the weather trends compared to the past vintage. The harvest began a week later than usual, but the grapes showed their excellent potential.
The Sangiovese ripened before the Cabernet Sauvignon giving grapes rich in colour and structure with good potential.
Also the grapes Cabernet were harvested under very good conditions showing the features required to obtain high-quality wines: typical varietal aromas, intense colours and very sweet tannin structure.
The vintage was concluded during the first days of October.

Castello della Sala
The particularly rigid winter temperatures caused a delay in the regrowth of vegetation in the variety present in this area.
The period close to flowering was characterized by mild temperatures and scarce rain allowing fruit-setting. During July temperatures reached 40° C causing the fast veraison while the mild temperatures and frequent rains of August caused a constant but slow ripening.
The harvest of Chardonnay began at the end August and extended throughout September during which also the Pinot Noir was picked up, showing a good balance between sugar and polyphenolic ripening.
The fogs of October allowed the formation of noble rot on grapes to be used for the production of the Muffato thus making it possible to complete the vintage in October.
