De Australische wijnmaker Rosemount heeft als een van de eerste producenten aangekondigd te stoppen met kurk.
Er wordt alleen nog maar wijn gemaakt met schroefdop.
Rosemount throws out corks
Rosemount is the first major player in the Australian wine industry to announce its entire production is to be switched to screw caps, completely doing away with natural cork closures.
Both red and white wines will in future be changed to Stelvin screw-caps. The decision affects all wines, not just basic everyday wines, it includes the high-quality Show Reserve wines, destined for lengthy maturation.
The change-over is to take place over the nexttwo years; a new bottle shape will be introduced at the same time. Rosemount says the decision was based on the increased acceptance of screw-cap closures not only in Australia, but in Europe and other markets as well.
Observers expect that in the medium-term other Australian wine companies will at least consider a similar decision.
Rosemount has an annual production of more than 40 mullion bottles, and is owned by the Foster's beer and wine conglomerate, and may inspire others to follow suit soon.
